The 7″ from Phaseone and Parisian is out now. Head over to our store to grab your copy!
From Interview Magazine: Down-tempo comrades and St. Louis natives Phaseone and Parisian originally bonded over a love for mid-2000s dubstep. Today the former hip-hop producers admit that the genre’s gotten egregiously warped over the years, but they’ve definitely strayed far from their early influences.
Though hundreds of miles apart—Phaseone lives in Brooklyn with his girlfriend, Parisian remains “stuck” in St. Louis—the two make a similar brand of ethereal, instrumental music. While you can hear the hip-hop past more in Phaseone’s production through his samples and song structures, Parisian works in a more experimental, abstract world. Still, their styles meet in a spacey, atmospheric place, where they’re able to curate distinct emotional journeys, hypnotic in their own ways. (More)Read More
Last year’s False Astronomy EP by Chicago-based producer Mister Lies (a.k.a. Nick Zanca) seemed to come out of nowhere, but nonetheless managed to light up every single ear and blog that it touched. Taken from his Mowgli LP (due out via Lefse on February 26), “Lupine” shows off two different sides of the producer, illustrating more or less exactly why we recently included him in our Bubblin’ Up series. The track doesn’t stand still: Beginning with a loungey groove, “Lupine” is soon sideswiped by a Blade Runner-esque wash of synths before taking a hard left into clattering garage. It goes on to interchange distant vocal samples with melodic hooks that wouldn’t be out of place in a Julio Bashmore track, bringing them all together at the finale. Mister Lies seems to be slowly carving out a distinguished niche for himself, and if anything, “Lupine” just makes the wait for its parent album all the more exciting.
Head over to XLR8R to hear, “Lupine”!Read More
A few years ago, Foreign Born put out some of our favorite records – 2007′s On the Wing Now and 2009′s Person to Person. Over the last decade Foreign Born’s multifaceted lead singer Matt Popieluch has been busy collaborating with Taken By Trees, Fool’s Gold, Glasser and Papercuts. In 2011 Popieluch released the Middle Man/Getting Warm 7″ under the moniker Big Search. Today, we are pleased to announce that we will be releasing Big Search’s Distant Shore 7″ as part of the Lefse 7″ series. The 7″ features tracks, “Distant Shore”, “Lost Coming Down” and an additional song on a download card. Head over to Spin to listen to the A side. Pre-order Big Search’s 7″ now from our store!
From The Fader:
Chicago philosophy student and producer Mister Lies will release his debut LP, Mowgli, recorded in a Vermont cabin, on February 26th via Lefse. He’s already let loose a few impressive album tracks—the squelchy “Align” and skittering “Dionysian,” both embedded below—but nothing so fully realized as “Hounded,” a downtempo burner that, despite featuring vocals from the Brooklyn husband-wife duo Exitmusic, hits the hardest when the singing shushes, two minutes in. A siren wails and the beat rumbles in the bottom of your neck. More
Stream, “Hounded” below and watch for Mister Lies on tour this March.
